Sinopse

Depois da morte do marido e da filha num brutal acidente de automóvel, Diane fecha-se em casa durante um ano, imersa em recordações, incapaz de reagir. Mas, quando já nada parece poder mudar, é precisamente uma dessas recordações que a faz escolher Mulranny, uma pequeníssima aldeia na Irlanda, como destino.

Instalada numa casa em frente ao mar, Diane é gentilmente recebida por todos os habitantes - todos menos um. Será Edward, o bruto e antipático vizinho, a resgatar Diane da apatia em que parece estar novamente a mergulhar. Primeiro, pela ira e pelo ódio. Mas depois, contra todas as expectativas, pela atracção. Como enfrentar este turbilhão de sentimentos? O que fazer com eles?

Opinião com spoilers

O título e a capa não me atraíram antes pelo contrário, mas a sinopse deixou-me intrigada. No início temos uma Diane em modo severamente deprimido, tendo praticamente desistido da vida, após a morte da filha pequena e do marido num acidente de viação. Com a ajuda do amigo e sócio Felix  (ambos têm um café /livraria chamado As Pessoas Felizes) ela decide ir para a Irlanda e instala-se numa casa em frente ao mar. 

Diane é bem recebida por todos os habitantes, típico de uma pequena povoação, com excepção do seu vizinho Edward. As várias atitudes que este toma, por um lado deixaram-me intrigada por outro ficava com vontade de lhe partir um tijolo na cabeça. Mas pelo menos com estes comportamentos,  Diane sai da apatia em que parece estar novamente a mergulhar.

E aos poucos ambos se envolvem e aparentemente de modo muito profundo. Até aqui tudo bem. Escrita envolvente, história e descrição dos personagens credível e mesmo capaz de nos levar ás lágrimas.

Daqui para a frente foi o descalabro.

Aparece a ex do Edward que o traiu entre outras coisas e o que é que ele faz? Manda-a passear? Não! Manda passear a Diane. A Diane como cresceu imenso desde o início do livro, sofre no início mas depois continua com a sua vida sem o Edward certo? Não. Luta por ele, que com duas mulheres aos pés não sabe o que há-de fazer. Convém referir que o comportamento odioso do Edward para com a Diane foi todo por causa das coisas que a ex lhe fez, e mesmo assim ele deixa-a ficar em sua casa para terem uma possível reconciliação. Finalmente a Diane ganha juízo e decide voltar para casa e retomar o negócio da livraria/café, quando o Edward lá se decide e quer impedi-la de ir. Ela desta vez vai à vida dela, mas aqui percebemos que o Edward quer mesmo é ficar com ela e não soube gerir a situação em que se encontrava. Pois, temos pena porque a Diane já não está para aí virada.

Opinion

Anna always felt different from the other people because she could see their auras but also she has enhanced senses, a good memory and never has been sick. 

The idea for the story was good and it was what interested me, but the writing was poor, repetitive, boring even. The things just keep hapening to Anna but she never show a strong emotion  towards those things and revelations. She saw Kaiden and fell in love with him just because he was handsome. He was a big bad, no wait, he was not, his father was. Wait everybody is evil except Anna. Anna is so pure that cannot be around all the people in her life. They tell her that but she still is around them all instead of going away as she should.

Maybe this is a book that targets younger readers that won't notice all the things that seem wrong, but then, the sexual content and sexual tension is not for younger readers in my opinion.

The Siren - Kiera Cass - Opinião

Sinopsis

"You must never do anything that might expose our secret. This means that, in general, you cannot form close bonds with humans. You can speak to us, and you can always commune with the Ocean, but you are deadly to humans. You are, essentially, a weapon. A very beautiful weapon. I won't lie to you, it can be a lonely existence, but once you are done, you get to live. All you have to give, for now, is obedience and time..." 

The same speech has been given hundreds of times to hundreds of beautiful girls who enter the sisterhood of sirens. Kahlen has lived by these rules for years now, patiently waiting for the life she can call her own. But when Akinli, a human, enters her world, she can't bring herself to live by the rules anymore. Suddenly the life she's been waiting for doesn't seem nearly as important as the one she's living now.

Opinion

So this book is about mermaids. As a fan of the Disney movie The Little Mermaid and The Selection series from Kiera Cass, I was excited to read this book. The story has a strong begining with the main character forced to make  a choice: to die or to become a siren and for 100 years sing people to their deaths. As is obvious  she chooses to become a siren. The story follows her and her sisters sirens through the years and the conflict she has with herself for killing people and with The Ocean that made the deal with her but also cares for her very much. Until the day she meets a boy named Akinli and with a couple of sentences falls in love with him.  Really, she meets him twice and falls so madly in love all of a suden that she is willing to risk herself and her sisters for that love. So these two conflicts extend trough all the book, making it boring and leading to a predictable end. 

I think that this could work as a short story, cutting the parts that where stretched and add nothing to the story.

The Wrath & The Dawn

Sinopsis

Every dawn brings horror to a different family in a land ruled by a killer. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, takes a new bride each night only to have her executed at sunrise. So it is a suspicious surprise when sixteen-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid. But she does so with a clever plan to stay alive and exact revenge on the Caliph for the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. Shazi's wit and will, indeed, get her through to the dawn that no others have seen, but with a catch...she's falling in love with the very boy who killed her dearest friend. She discovers that the murderous boy-king is not all that he seems and neither are the deaths of so many girls. Shazi is determined to uncover the reason for the murders and to break the cycle once and for all.

Opinion

From the sinopsis I was interested in the story: kind of a retelling of the 1001 nights, mixing fantasy, romance and magic with deserts and oasis as background.

 I didn't feel particularly swept away by it, or moved until closer to the end. This was because I had some dificulties liking the mais characters and understanding their motivations, while the author was worldbuilding. 

On the the last third of the book there's finally an outpouring of emotion, when the story catches a little fire and made me genuinely invested in the characters, intrigued about where the author was leading us,  and anxious to see what was going to happen.

What I liked:

-- Interesting theme
-- A world very different from what we're used to in Fantasy/YA

-- The various misteries happening all at once, concerning all the characters

-- Almost nothing was what it seemed

-- Nice action scenes towards the end

-- The romance (with some restraints on my part)

What I wanted;
-- Magic well explained
-- Understanding the characters more, they lacked dimension
-- understanding why the two main characters are drawn together, particularly why Khalid is so intrigued by Shazi that he continues to spare her life

-- Feel more conected with the characters

Shahrzad is almost a prisoner caught between loyalties to people she loves. But she refuses to be a pawn and devises a plan. While her father, Jahandar, continues to play with magical forces he doesn't yet understand, Shahrzad tries to uncover powers that may lie dormant within her. With the help of a tattered old carpet and a tempestuous but sage young man, Shahrzad will attempt to break the curse and reunite with her one true love."

Opinion

The author read my thoughts on the first installement, because what I thought was laking on the first book was developed and wraped in the second book. 

We get to see more magic, and connect with the characters, understanding their motivations and where they were heading. 

We see the bond linking Shazi and Khalid, and doesn't look instalove anymore.

And the plot twists were also good to keep me guessing, adding some more mistery.

The bad aspects also existed: although I would like to know more about two characters who were secundary to the story but vital to the outcome because they were the key to the magic. I never understand why Shazi had magic. And it seemed so easy to Khalid break the curse after all the drama around it! So some wrap up of the story seemed rushed as we remain guessing what hapened to other characters except for the main ones.

Já vos aconteceu começarem um livro e não vos apetecer continuar a lê-lo? E depois começar outro e também pousá-lo? E outro? E outro?

Pois, isso é o que me tem acontecido por isso acho que estou numa fase em que não consigo ler aka reading slump...

Bookunhaul #4 com reviews

E com a compra de livros, leitura de outros, há aqueles que depois de lidos não me despertaram interesse e aqueles que comecei a ler mas não consegui terminar. Por isso aqui vai mais um unhaul:

O Mar Infinito -Rick Yancey

Este não cheguei sequer a abrir para ler. Comprei-o quando comprei o A 5Vaga e apesar de não ter desgostado desse também não o achei nada de por aí além e perdi o interesse em continuar a série.

Fire & Flood; Salt & Stone - Victoria Scott

Comecei a ler esta duologia com o Fire & Flood mas achei a personagem principal tão chorona e infantil que o pousei e não me apeteceu voltar a pegar.

Sense & Sensibility - Joanna Trollope

O Sensibilidade e Bom Senso da Jane Austen foi sempre o romance que menos gostei da autora Mas quando ouvi falar sobre esta versão da Joanna Trollope nesta edição linda tratei de o comprar. Mas lá está apesar de ser uma adaptação aos tempos modernos de um clássico, continua a ser aborrecido. Para os fãs do original, sem dúvida que recomendo.

Os livros Bloodlines, Falling Kingdoms e The Summer Garden, vieram com aspecto usado e um pouco danificados por isso enviei mail ao site a reclamar e devolveram metade do valor que paguei por cada livro, logo ficaram bastante em conta. Se gostar realmente deles após os ler, compro mais tarde novos para juntar ás estantes.

Bookshelves - Maio 2016

Pela primeira vez, decidi fazer uma espécie de bookshelf tour, que em vez de ser em vídeo é em imagens. Como andei a reorganizar as estantes, achei que era a altura ideal para tirar fotos, tanto para eu ter um registo dos meus livros, como para vos mostrar. Espero que gostem!

As minhas "estantes" são na realidade 2 vitrinas Detolf do Ikea, pois assim são transparentes para os livros estarem bem visíveis, e por outro lado minimiza muito o pó que estes apanham numa estante normal.

Perdida - Carina Rissi - Opinião

Sinopse

Sofia é uma jovem de 24 anos que vive numa grande cidade e está habituada à sua vida independente e moderna. Divertida, mas solitária, Sofia não acredita no amor, convencida de que os únicos romances da sua vida são aqueles que os livros lhe proporcionam. Após comprar um telemóvel novo, porém, algo misterioso acontece e Sofia descobre que está perdida no século XIX, sem saber como ou se poderá voltar para a sua casa, para o «seu» século.

Enquanto tenta encontrar uma solução, é acolhida pela família Clarke, à qual, à medida que os dias passam, se afeiçoa cada vez mais.
Com a ajuda do prestável — e lindo — Ian Clarke, Sofia embarca numa busca frenética e acaba por encontrar pistas que talvez a ajudem a regressar à sua vida.
O que ela não sabe é que o seu coração tem outros planos, e que a ideia de deixar o século XIX pode vir a tornar-se angustiante…
Perdida é uma história divertida, apaixonante e intensa, que vai querer devorar até à última página.

Opinião

É um romance leve e divertido que se lê bem rápido. A história não é propriamente a primeira do seu género: rapariga moderna viaja no tempo para o passado e apaixona-se por um cavaleiro dessa época mas têm de ultrapassar as diferenças inerentes à educação e modo de vida de cada um. O que me agradou foi mesmo as situações hilariantes em que a protagonista se envolvia e a escrita da autora que me fazia querer ler mais uma página e depois só mais uma e num estante o livro chegou ao fim. Por outro lado não sei se o problema foi a tradução ou se o texto foi mesmo escrito assim, pois algumas das expressões "modernas" que a Sofia utilizava não se encaixavam muito bem de acordo com a caracterização que era feita da personagem. Também foi muito óbvio desde início que a Sofia e o Ian se iam envolver, o que pareceu um "instalove". 

Gostei da leitura porque me diverti enquanto lia e espero que a Top Seller continue com a série.

A maioria deles foram comprados com desconto e aproveitei dinheiro que recebi no meu aniversário para os adquirir :)
